ISLIP, NY — Firefighters rescued a woman trapped in her car after she crashed into a police vehicle on Long Island on Friday morning, according to Suffolk police and fire department officials.
Police said a 57-year-old woman was driving a 2006 Honda northbound on Saxon Avenue in Islip and when she was nearing a traffic light at westbound Sunrise Highway, she hit the accelerator instead of the brake and struck a Third Precinct police vehicle and a parked car before ending on a lawn around 10:30 a.m.
The Islip Fire Department responded to the scene and said that upon arrival, they found the Honda stuck between two trees with the woman trapped inside. Firefighters used the HURST Jaws of Life rescue tool to safely remove the woman, who they transported by ambulance to South Shore University Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
The officer in the other vehicle was not injured, police said.
